Citi Premier℠ Card Review

Good: For people who use credit cards for most of their purchases

Better: For people who spend big on entertainment

Best: For frequent travelers

Before you fly off on your next vacation, take a look at the rewards program offered by the Citi Premier℠ Card. It features an amazing introductory offer, along with double and triple rewards for travelers who like to spend big. The Premier rewards program also features ways for you to build up points on everyday purchases and monthly expenses.

The basics

  • APR: 17.99%-25.99% on purchases and balance transfers, based on creditworthiness. Balance transfers incur a $5 or 3% fee, whichever is higher.
  • Annual Fee: $95
  • Reward Rates: Earn three points for every dollar you spend on travel, including airfare, car rentals, hotel accommodation, parking, public transportation and tolls.

Earn two points for every dollar you spend on entertainment, including restaurant and bar tabs, concerts, movie tickets and sporting events.

Earn one point for every dollar you spend on all other purchases.

  • Introductory Offer: Earn 60,000 bonus points when you make $4,000 in purchases with the Premier Card during the first three months of membership. With 60,000 points you can purchase a $750 airline ticket or a $600 gift card.

Standout features

  • Premier Card members can order Citi Preferred tickets for concerts, comedy shows, food festivals, sporting events and theatre performances through Citi Entertainment. Membership also entitles you to exclusive offers from participating merchants.
  • With the Premier card you can use digital wallets, including Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay, at checkout.
  • The Premier Card features contactless chip technology, which allows you to tap your card instead of swiping it at point-of-sale terminals. You can also link your Premier Card to your PayPal account for faster checkout at online stores.
  • Premier cardholders can take advantage of Citi’s concierge services to make dinner reservations, buy entertainment tickets or make travel arrangements.
  • Sign up for Citi’s virtual account number program for safer online shopping.
  • Premier members can use the Citi Mobile App, available for Apple and Android devices, to receive account alerts, make mobile check deposits, pay bills, view statements and send and receive money through Zelle. The Apple version of the app integrates with Siri, enabling cardholders to use voice commands to get Premier Card account information.

Best way to use this card

Use the Premier Card to pay for all your travel expenses – while saving money and earning rewards. If you spend $8,000 to take your family on a Caribbean vacation, you can earn 24,000 rewards points.

Make all your entertainment purchases using the Premier Card and earn double points for every dollar you spend. Double rewards pile up fast, particularly when you use the card for fine dining and event tickets. When you and a date spend $350 a piece to see a Broadway show, then spend $100 each for dinner at a swanky restaurant, you can earn 1,800 rewards points. That’s not bad for a night out on the town.

Use the Premier card to pay for all your regular monthly expenses. A family of four can spend $500 per month on groceries and pay another $500 for cell phone bills, internet service, cable television and electric bills. Paying those monthly expenses with this card could net 12,000 rewards points every year.

In a nutshell

The Citi Premier Card offers one of the most generous introductory offers on the market. Spending just $4,000 in the first month of membership can deliver a windfall of rewards points.

It lacks the introductory 0% interest period offered by some competitors, and it charges a $95 annual fee. It’s no big deal if you plan to use the card a lot, but if you’re planning to do a balance transfer, it’s best to look elsewhere.

Citi has also taken mobile digital payments a step further by allowing cardholders to link to PayPal accounts. PayPal stores your billing information, which lets you avoid reentering data when making online purchases. And, the card’s tap-to-pay technology saves you time in the store.

Overall, the Citi Premier Card is a great credit card for frequent travelers and those who enjoy dining out and attending events. If that sounds like you, the Premier Card might fit the bill.
